Born during the June quarter 1881 in  the Prestwich R.D. - ref: 8d/413, the
son of Albert & Elixabeth Thorley (nee Ogden).

In March 1881, his parents were residing at 13 Poplar Street, Failsworth,
which is probably where John was born.

1891 Census - 19 Herbert Street, Newton Heath, Manchester.  Nephew [great
nephew] - aged: 9 - Scholar - born: Failsworth, Manchester.   Head of
household - Mary Ellen Ditchfield - Married - aged: 62 - occ: Winder -
born: Failsworth.   Also Albert Thorley (John's father) - Nephew - Married
- aged: 35 - occ: Carter - born: Failsworth.   Also - Elizabeth Thorley -
Niece - Married - aged: 38 - born: Newton Heath.   Plus 2 of John's elder
sisters - Lily (15) and Ellen Ann (14).

His father died in 1896, aged: 41 and his mother in 1898, aged: 45.

Married Sabina Newton at St. Michael's PC Flixton on the 5th November 1904,
the marriage being registered during the December quarter 1904 in the
Barton upon Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/973.  In 1901, Sabina was employed as a
Cotton Weaver.  Their daughter - Lily was born on the 15th January 1905 and
their second daughter - Elizabeth on the 28th May 1906.

1911 Census - 7 Greenfield Terrace, Flixton.   Head of household - Married
- aged:29 - occ: Decorator & Painter - born: Failsworth.   Also - Sabina
Thorley - Wife - aged: 28 - born: Flixton.   Plus their 2 daughters - Lily
(6) and Elizabeth (4).

WO363 - Enlisted into the King's (Liverpool Rgt) at Manchester on the 7th
September 1914.  He was aged, 33 years, 6 months and employed as a
Decorator.  Posted to the 13th Battalion on the 2nd October 1914.  He was 5
feet 7 1/2 inches in height, weighed 134 lb, his chest measurements being
36 to 38 1/2 inches.  He had a Fresh complexion, Blue eyes and Grizzley
hair.   He recorded 2 brothers - James & Robert, plus 3 sisters - Ellen
Ann, Lily, & Alice.   Whilst at Aldershot on the 18th August 1915, he went
absent on a pass from 21.30 hrs to 10.30 hrs on the 19th.  He was confined
to barracks and had 2 days pay deducted.   He was posted to France on the
26th September 1915.  The Army returned his personal effects to his widow -
Sabina.  These included:- 1 disc - 1 farthing coin - a packet of letters
and cards - 1 broken mirror - 1 purse - 1 pipe - scissors - 1 watch in case
- 1 tobacco box.   Wounded in the leg and died the next day. 

M.I. - "Always remembered by those who loved him.  Wife & Children".
