The "Eloby" was built in 1913 and had a gross tonnage of 6,545 tons.   On
the 19th July 1917 she was torpedoed in the Mediterranean, 75 mile S.E. by
E. from Malta in position 35.11N - 15.38E by the German submarine U-38.   
56 men were lost, including the Master - William Wright..

Commemorated on his In-Law's gravestone in Sale Cemetery - X.5307 - the
gravestone is now laid flat.      On this, the name of the ship is spelt
"Elobe".   However, both the CWGC and the book "British Merchant Ships Sunk
by U-Boats During the 1st W.W. states "Eloby". 

His In-Law's were James & Alice Hill of Baxter Road, Sale.   James died
09/03/1921 aged 73 years and his wife Alice died 21/07/1909 aged 60 years. 
Their son Harry the 3rd Officer on the S.S. Gloucestershire died on the
21/06/1911 (natural causes ?) aged 27 years and was buried at the Rangoon
Cemetery, Burma.
