His father's office was at the Bank of England Chambers, Tib Lane,
Manchester.

His MIC records that he was originally a Corporal in the Royal Engineers -
No. 29031.  He was posted to France on the 26th October 1914 and
commissioned 2nd Lieutenant with the R.Es on the 1st July 1916.
