Born during the September quarter 1885 in the Newark R.D. - ref: 7b/430, the eldest son of John & Edith Southern (nee Havercroft). 1891 Census - West View, Kirkby Overblow, Wetherby, Yorkshire. Son – aged: 5 – born: Westborough, Lincolnshire. Head of household – John Southern - Married - aged: 27 - occ: Police Constable - born: Doddington, Lincolnshire. Also – Edith Southern - wife - aged: 27 - born: Kirmington, Lincolnshire. Plus one younger siblings – Charles aged: 3. 1901 Census - Horst Cottage, Follifoot, Knaresborough, near Harrogate. Son - aged: 15 - born: Westborough, Lincolnshire. Head of household – John Southern - Married - aged: 37 - occ: Police Constable - born: Doddington, Lincolnshire. Also – Edith Southern - wife - aged: 37 - born: Kirmington, Lincolnshire. Plus three younger siblings – Charles aged: 13, Arthur aged: 7 and Dorothy aged: 6. 1911 Census – No trace. 1915 - Marriage. Resided at 9 Mayfield Grove, Harrogate - occ: Grocer when he married Lilian Bilbrough aged 24 at St Luke Parish Church, Harrogate on 9th October 1915. No records could be found as to when John William Southern joined the Royal Field Artillery. Served in Middle East (Egypt and Palestine) when he was killed in action on 13 January 1918. |
