Born in New Orleans, U.S.A. in 1879 and came to the UK in 1883.  The son of
George & Alice Marie Hartley.

1881 Census - No Trace.   Probably at  New Orleans, U.S.A. according to the
birth details of his siblings.

His father - George Hartley died in 1909 - aged: 60.

He was the head of Messrs. Alfred Hartley & Co. Cotton Merchants, 17 St.
Ann's Square, Manchester.

Attended Mr. Lloyd Jones's Private School at Brooklands where he showed
promise as a slow left hand bowler.    He gradually developed his batting
prowess and in 1900 scored 1,037 runs in 34 innings, taking 61 wickets for
14 runs per wicket.

In 1905 he joined the Limbrick Club and made 1,319 runs in 33 innings,
which included three centuries.   In 1906 he scored 1,64 runs in 31
innings.   His debut in first class cricket came in August 1907 when he
played against Middlesex at Manchester.   He scored 234 runs in the
Lancashire v Somerset match of 1910.    His younger brother - Charles R.
Hartley also played cricket for Lancashire.

He was the Secretary of the Sale F.C. for some years and he played Rugby
for Cheshire and the North of England. Played cricket and coached boys at
St. John's Brooklands.

The 263rd RGA Seige Battery which fired 4" - 6" Howitzers, were part of the
4th Army - 12th Brigade.        Alfred died of wounds - during October and
November 1918, the Vadencourt British Cemetery was used by the 5th, 47th &
61st Casualty Clearing Stations as well as by Field Ambulances.

He had just returned to the front following two weeks leave at home, when
his battery went into action.   He was wounded as soon as the firing
started and died a few hours later.

Death reported in the 18/10/1918 edition of the Altrincham Guardian.

M.I. (France) - "In glad thanksgiving for his dear life, full of sweet
memories".

Commemorated on the private family gravestone in Christchurch Churchyard. 
The CWGC list his widow as living at 73 Holland Park, London.     
Commemorated on the Lancashire County Cricket Club,  the Sale RUFC and Sale
Cricket Club war memorials.  Also commemorated on St. John's P.C.

The 27/06/1919 edition of the local newspaper reports that "Mr. Edwin
Stockton of Bowdon, the President of the Chamber of Commerce, has presented
to the Sale Cricket & Lawn Tennis Club, a tablet in memory of members who
have fallen in the war.   The names inscribed include that of Alfred
Hartley, the Lancashire County Cricketer.     Mr. Stockton, has been
associated with the Club for 30 years and for a considerable period was
Captain.      The ceremony of unveiling was performed on Thursday night of
last week, by the Rev. Joseph Chapman - Vicar of St. Paul's Church, Sale.

His father, George died 09/09/1909 aged 59 years and his mother died at
Sinoia, Rhodesia on 08/11/1922 aged 71 years.
