Born during the September quarter 1890 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/169, the eldest son of Carl Christian & Fanny Sophia Schaefer (nee Taylor). 1891 Census - 20 Temple Road, Sale. Son - aged: 10 months. Head of household - Carl C. Schaefer - Married - aged: 28 - occ: Bank Manager - born: Hulme, Manchester. Also - Fanny S. Schaefer - Wife - aged: 26 - born: Stretford. Plus 1 domestic servant. Following his mother's death, Herman's Paternal grandmother stepped in to provide a family home for her son and two grandsons. 1901 Census - 212 Palmerston Street, Beswick, North Manchester. Grandson - aged: 10 - born: Sale. Head of household - Elizabeth Schaefer - Widow - aged: 62 - occ: Spirit & Beer Seller - born: Manchester. Also Carl C. Schaefer (his father son to head) - Widower - occ: Brewer's Clerk - born: Manchester. Plus his younger brother - grandson - Herman Schaefer - aged: 7 - born: Manchester. His father died in 1906 - aged: 43 and the two, now orphaned lads were taken in by an uncle and aunt. 1911 Census - 9 Henderson Street, Levenshulme, Manchester.
