Born during the December qarter 1894 in the Altrincham R..D. - ref: 8a/166,
the son of George Wharton & Gertrude Boothroyd Derbyshire (nee Johnson).

1901 Census - 27 Tatton Road North, Heaton Norris, Stockport.   Son - aged:
6 - born: Cheshire.   Head of household - George W. Derbyshire - Married -
aged: 36 - occ: Manager Fruit Trade - born: Liverpool.    Also - Gertrude
B. Derbyshire - Wife - aged: 35 - born: Southport.    Plus 2 sisters,
maternal grandmother and uncle and 1 domestic servant.

1911 Census - 15 Parsonage Road, Heaton Moor, Stockport.   Son - aged: 16 -
occ: Apprentice - born: Brookland Heaton, Cheshire.   Head of household -
George Wharton Derbyshire - Married - aged: 46 - occ: Manager - born:
Liverpool.    Also - Gertrude Boothroyd Derbyshire - Wife - aged: 45 -
born: Southport.    Plus 2 sisters, paternal grandmother and aunt and 1
domestic servant.

On the 10th October 1916 during the Battle of the Somme 1916, the battalion
moved close to the village of Longueval where they were building a new road
to nearby High Wood.  The next day, they moved to Crest Trench near
Montauban digging communication trenches and improving defences. The
Battalion War Diary notes that, during the afternoon, they were heavily
shelled by the enemy.  Six men were killed and another two wounded. 
Presmably, James was one of the two wounded that day.
