Born at Ashton upon Mersey in 1893, the son of Charles & Annie Hill (nee
Holland).

1901 Census - No Trace.

1911 Census - No Trace.

WO363 - Enlisted into the 3rd Battalion, Cheshire Rgt at Stockport on the
13th October 1910.  Mobilized at Chester 31st August 1914.   Born at Ashton
upon Mersey - aged: 17 years 10 months and employed as a Labourer.  He was
5 feet, 2 inches in height and weighed 106 lb.  His chest measurements were
31 1/2 inches x 33 1/2 inches.   Hair: Brown - Eyes: Grey.   Personal
property was to be sent to Mrs. Annie Hill,  Blea Tarn Cottage, Scotforth,
Lancaster.   Next of Kin - Father Charles Hill, 17 Lylock Street, Heaviley,
Stockport.   In May 19111 he was disciplined for talking on the Range, for
which he received 3 days C.B. (Confined to Barracks).  He had two brothers
- Robert Hill and Percy Hill.   Robert Hill Service No. 17104 served in the
4th Troop, 'C' Squadron, 17th Lancers, Carragh Camp.

1st Battalion, Cheshiere Regiment - Arrived Abbeville during evening of
07/10 and marched to billets; Buses to La Thieuloye and then to Béthune
11/10; Moved into firing line at Festubert 12/10; Rue d'Ouvert 16/10;
Unsuccesful attacks towards Violaines 17/10; Unsuccessful attempt to occupy
La Basse (32 casualties) 19/10; Held positions outside Violaines - enemy
attack repulsed at 15.00hrs (29 casualties) 20/10; Another attack on La
Basse failed 21/10; Heavy attack by the enemy, who took the trenches "at
the point of a bayonet" 22/10 and fell back to Rue du Marais under heavy
fire (18 wounded 216 missing).
