In preparation for the Battle of the Somme 1916, the 11th Bn, Cheshire Rgt,
moved from Toutencourt to Hédauville during night 30/06; Martinsart Wood
02/07; Forward to 'Black Horse Bridge' and assembled for attack south of
Thiepval during night 03/07; Passed over 'No-mans Land' in perfect order ,
but heavy machine gun fire brought assault to a standstill about 50 yards
from the German first line - line after line of British troops were mown
down - 20 officers and 657 other ranks went into the trenches - only 6
officers and 350 other ranks came out. Albert 06/07; Moved forward to 'Usna
Redoubt' during the night of 11/07; Moved forward to Brigade reserve
positions during the night of 13/07; Moved forward to front line in
preparation for attack north of Ovillers Church during the night 14/07;
Relieved and to Senlis 15/07; Hédauville 16/07; Amplier 17/07.
