Born during the June quarter 1887 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/169, the son of John & Elizabeth Royle (nee Groom). In 1881 his parents - John & Elizabeth Royle were residing at 14 William Street, Altrincham. His father was aged: 26 and employed as a Cab Driver, born at Sale. His father - John Royle died during the March quarter 1891 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a.141 - aged: 39. 1891 Census - 5 Brook Street, Sale. Son - aged: 4 - born: Sale. Head of household - Elizabeth Royle - Widow - aged: 35 - occ: Charwoman - born: Liverpool. Plus 6 siblings, all born at Sale - the youngest being just 2 months of age. Attended the Sale Township School. His mother - Elizabeth Royle married William Collinson during the March quarter 1893 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/243. They produced twin daughters in 1894 - Alfred's half sisters. 1901 Census - 12 Bank Street, Sale. Son - aged: 14 - occ: Errand Boy - born: Sale. Elizabeth Collinson - Widow - aged: 44 - occ: Laundress - born: Liverpool. Plus 6 siblings and 2 half sisters. His eldest brother - Thomas born in 1877 was also a Cab Driver like his father. 1911 Census - 12 Bank Street, Sale. Son - aged: 25 - occ: Railway Porter - born: Sale. Elizabeth Collinson - Widow - aged: 54 - occ: none given - born: Liverpool. Plus 1 sister and 2 half sisters. Employed as a Warehouseman at the Railway Goods Yard at Sale Railway Station and later at Seymour Mead's of Sale. The 01/09/1916 edition of the local newspaper reports that he had been wounded and was in hospital at Liverpool. Death reported in the 11/04/1919 edition of the Altrincham Guardian. Shot in head and lungs in France in 1917 (1916 actually) - spent 10 months in hospital at Liverpool, then invalided out of the Army and died of his wounds two years later. Funeral the previous Saturday - 5th April His father - John Royle, bought the grave on the 8/5/1889 in order to bury his son Ernest (Alfred's brother) who died on 07/05/1889 aged 8 years. His father - John Royle, died on 05/03/1891. His mother in 1925. Private headstone - HE IS NOT RECOGNISED BY THE CWGC. |
