Attended Timperley C of E School and was a member of the Timperley P.C.
Choir.   Employed by Messrs. George Richards Engineering Co, Broadheath.

Married Sarah Ratcliffe during the March quarter 1913 in the Bucklow R.D. -
ref: 8a/293.   Post War, Sarah resided at 17 Dale Square, Broadheath.

Enlisted in Novemeber 1914 and drafted to Egypt.   MIC states that he was
drafted to the (2b) Balkans (Gallipoli) on the 7th August 1915 and was
awarded the 15 Star, the BWM & the VM.

5th (Service) Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers was formed at Armagh in
August 1914 as part of K1 and came under command of 31st Brigade in 10th
(Irish) Division.   In April 1915 the battalion moved to Basingstoke and
entrained for Devonport on the 11th July 1915, where they embarked on the
S.S. Andania.   They sailed on the 12th arriving at Gibraltar on the 15th
and Malta on the 18th.    They sailed for Egypt on the 20th, arriving at
Alexandria on then 22nd.   Sailed from Alexandra on the 24th and arrived at
Mudros Harbour, Lemnos on the 26th.   Sailed to Mitylene on the 30th and
arrived at Port Iero on the 31st July, where they remained in harbour.   

Transhipped to the S.S. Osmanich on the 6th August and sailed for
Gallipoli.  They anchored in Sulva Bay at 04.30 hrs on the 7th August 1915.
 As they were disembarking on 'C' Beach two bombs were dropped near to the
ship from aircraft.   From 'C' Beach they advanced under shrapnel fire over
the ridge to Lala Baba, taking part in the successful attack on Chocolate
Hil.  They  advanced towards Hill 10 and crossed Salt Lake with many
sinking above the knees.   The enemy concentrated their shell fire and
there were many casualties.   More casualties were sustained fro enemy
snipers hiding in the shrub.  Their objective was taken by 20.00 hrs that
day, but without John Hampson - killed on his first day in action.

Death reported in the 01/10/1915 edition of the Altrincham Guardian, which
states that he was aged: 24 and lived at 29 Davenport Road, Broadheath.
