Born during the March quarter 1883 in the Manchester R.D. - ref: 8d/275,
the son of Charles & Theresa Barratt.

1891 Census - 246 Queens Road, Manchester.     Son - aged: 8 - Scholar -
born: Manchester.   Head of household - Charles Barratt - Married - aged:
34 - occ: Hairdresser - born: Edgeley, Stockport, Cheshire.   Also -
Theresa Barratt - Wife - aged: 36 - born: Manchester.  Plus 5 siblings.

His mother died in 1894, aged: 39.     His father married Ada Mary White in
1897.     The family (less Albert and his elder siblings) were still
residing at 246 Queens Road, Manchester at the time of the 1901 census.

1901 Census - 12 Marston Street, Manchester.    Head - aged: 18 - occ:
Printer's Labourer - born: Manchester.    Albert was one of 4 single
"heads" at this address - presumably, occupying rented rooms.

By 1911 his father and step-mother are at 250 Oldham Road, Miles Platting,
Manchester where his father had his hairdressing shop.

Employed in the Machine Room at the Daily Mail Offices in Manchester.

Married Adelaide Finlow on the 29th October 1913 at the Register Office,
Bridge Street, Manchester during the December quarter 1913 in the
Manchester R.D. - ref: 8d/417.    In 1911, Adelaide Finlow was a 21 year
old, domestic servant at 9 East Meade, Chorlton Ville, Chorlton cum Hardy,
Manchester.   Adelaide had a child - Ernest Finlow born on the 13th
February 1912 at Sale.    Arthur and Adelaide had two children - Gertrude
Elanor Barratt, born at Chorlton on the 6th December 1913 and Albert
Barratt, born at Sale on the 24th June 1915.  Less than a month later
Albert enlisted.    Baby Albert died later on in 1915.

WO363 - Attested from 9 Mason Street, off Cross Street, Sale on the 19th
July 1915 at Manchester and immediately posted to the 25th Battalion,
Manchester Regiment at Heaton Park.    Aged: 30 years, 8 months, employed
as a Printer.  Height: 5 feet 3¾ inches - Weight: 115 lb - Expanded chest:
34½ inches with a 2½ inch expansion.   He required dental treatment.  
Transferred to the 26th Battailion on the 12th August 1915 and into the
20th on the 26th October 1915.   Embarked at Folkestone  to France on the
9th November 1915.   Given 8 days Field Punishment No.2 for losing by
neglect, his tube helmet on the 22nd November 1915.  FP No.2 meant being
shackled for 2 hours per day, but not fixed to anything as in FP No.1.

At 14.30 hrs on the 1st July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme
1916, the Battalion attacked at the Quarry, some 300 yds South-east of the
Bois Francais-Mametz-Becordel Road.     110 killed, 29 missing and 171
wounded. 

Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1917.

The 20th Battalion, Manchester Regiment served with the 91st Brigade, 7th
