Born during the June quarter 1852 in the Bermondsey R.D. - ref: 1d/61, the
eldest child of Daniel & Eleanor (Ellen) Eley.

1861 Census - 48 East Lane, Bermondsey, London.   Son - aged: 8 - born:
Bermondsey.   Head of household - Eleanor Eley - Wife - aged: 32 - born:
Bermondsey.  Plus 4 younger siblings.  No trace of his father.

1871 Census - 162 Drummond Road, Bermondsey.   Son - aged: 18 - occ: None
given - born: Bermondsey.   Head of household - Ellen Eley - Wife - aged:
43 - born: Ireland.  Plus 2 younger siblings.   The census shows his 44
year old father - Daniel Eley as a Mariner, but a line has been drawn
through his record stating that he was "Absent at Sea".

He married Susan Moule during the December quarter 1876 in the St. Olave
R.D. - ref: 1d/426.

1881 Census - 16 Keeton Road, Bermondsey.   Head of the household - Married
- aged: 28 - occ: Mariner - born: Bermondsey.   Also - Susan Eley - Wife -
aged: 25 - born: Surrey.   Plus 2 young daughters.

1891 Census - 16 Keeton Road, Bermondsey.   Head of the household - Married
- aged: 38 - occ: Ship's Steward - born: Bermondsey.   Also - Susan Eley -
Wife - aged: 35 - born: Huntingdonshire.   Plus 3 Children and his sister
in law.

1901 Census - 22 February Street, Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester.   Only
his wife and 3 children are recorded.  He must have been at sea on Ceneus
night.   Susan ElEy - Wife - aged: 46 - born: Huntingdonshire.   Plus 3
adult children, aged: 19 to 23.

1911 Census - 20 February Street, Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester.   Head
of household - Married - aged: 58 - occ: Ship' Steward - born: Bermondsey. 
 Also Susan Eley - Wife - aged: 55 - born: Warboys, Huntingdonshire.   Plus
3 adult children, aged: 30 to 33.

Daniel was working the Manchester & Dublin route.  Soon  after the 1911
census, the family moved to "Sunnybank" Dunbar Lane, Ashton upon Mersey.

Drowned as a result of an attack by enemy submarine 'U62' in the Irish Sea,
7 miles east of Kish Lightvessel on voyage from Manchester to Dublin with
general cargo - 12 lost.   S.S. "Hare" - built 1886 - 774 gross tons.

He left a widow - Susan and a daughter Minnie.

His widow Susan died on the 05/03/1931 aged 76 years.   His daughter -
Minnie died on the 16/09/1913 aged 35 years.   Sale Cemetery M.I. - "Who
lost his life in the Irish Sea by enemy action".

His house is still standing, but is now part of Glebelands Rd.
