Born during the December quarter 1895 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/722,
the eldest son of William & Annie Howarth (nee Woods).    

Annie died during the December quarter 1903 - ref: 8d/143, aged: 29.   His
father then married Agnes Thomas in 1904 (no record found).   Agnes died
<1913 (no record found).   William then married Minnie B. Davenport during
the December quarter 1913 in the Bucklow R.D. - ref: 8a/379.

1901 Census - 98 Armitage Street, Chorlton, Manchester.   Son - aged: 5 -
born: Ardwick, Manchester.    Head of household - William Howarth - Married
- aged: 26 - occ: Iron Driller - born: Manchester.    Also Annie Howarth -
Wife - aged: 26 - born: Ardwick, Manchester.   Plus 1 younger sister.

Attended the Sale Township School.

1911  Census - 1 Brighton Grove, Ashton upon Mersey.   Son - aged: 15 -
occ: Apprentice Electrical Engineer - born: Manchester.   Head of household

Howarth - Wife - aged: 36 - born: Manchester.  William & Agnes had been
married for 7 years.

His father also worked at Messrs. Cook & Co, Altrincham.

WO363 - Enlisted at  Sale on the 5th September 1914.   Residing at 16 Bank
Street, Wharf Road, Sale  Aged: 19 years 360 days - born in St. Marks
Parish, Manchester.  5 feet 4 inches in height and weighed 115 lb.  Chest
measurements 32 to 34 inches.   He had Blue eyes, Dark brown hair and had a
dark complexion.  Employed as a Fitter.  Posted to Salonica on the 28th
October 1915.

Admitted into the 31 C.C.S. (Casualty Clearing Station) on the 27th May
1916 and transferred to No. 29 General Hospital the same day suffering from
P.U.O.  (Pyrexia of Unknown Origin) - Trench Fever.    Discharged from
hospital on the 13th June 1916.    Boarded the Hospital Ship H.S. Dundee
Castle on the 29th June 1916, arriving at Malta on the 4th July and into
St. David;'s Hospital.   Discharged from All Saints at Malta and was
returned to active service arriving back at Salonica on the 4th March 1917.
  Admitted into 20 Stationary Hospital on the 7th March 1917

In a letter dated the 9th February 1920, the War Office notified his father
that they had received communication from the Bulgarian Government that his
son had died whilst  a prisoner of war in a field hospital in the village
of Fourke, near Doiran on the 6th December 1917.   A witness - Corporal H.
Keam gave evidence that on the night of the 23rd/24th November 1917 he was
the NCO in charge of 4 privates in the front fire trench when they were
attacked at 23.00 hrs.   They withdrew to the support trench.   On the 
reorganisation of the garrison he noticed that Private Howarth was
missing.

Death reported in the 11/12/1917 edition of the Altrincham Guardian that
reported that he was a Drummer.

Pension Records - Dependant - Mr. William Howarth, 16 Bank Street, Off
Wharf Road, Sale.   Awarded a weekly pension of 4/- w.e.f. the 6th July
1918.   Record confirms that he was a Drummer.
