Trafford

Born at Ardwich in 1895, the son of William Alfred & Catherine Griffis (nee
Nicholson).   His father married Catherine Nicholson during the September
quarter 1897 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/1342.   In 1891, his father was
a Lodger residing on the Stockport Road, Ardwick, Manchester.  He was aged:
55, Single and his occupation - Bootmaker.

1901 Census - 12 Alma Street, Chorltoon, Manchester.   Son - aged: 5 -
born: Manchester.    Head of household - William Griffis - Married - aged:
64 - occ: Boot Maker - born: Madeley, Staffordshire.   Also - Catherine
Griffis - Wife - aged: 33 - born: Stockport, Cheshire.    Plus 5 siblings.

1911 Census - Rose Villa, Mornington Road, Sale.   Son - aged: 15 - Scholar

Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.   Also - Catherine Griffis - Wife - aged: 43

WO363 - Enlisted at Manchester on the 4th September 1914.   Born at
Ardwick, Manchester, aged 19 years, 7 months and employed as a Clerk.  He
was 5 feet 9 1/2 inches in height and weighed 128 lb.   His chest
measurements were 32 to 36 inches.  His eyes were Blue, his hair, Light
Brown and he had a Fresh complexion.   Served At Home (UK) from the 4th
September 1914 until the 7th November 1915.   Posted to France on the 8th
November 1915.   Appointed unpaid Lance Corporal on the 5th June 1915 and
Paid from the 29th April 1916.   Promoted to Corporal on the 18th June 1916
and to Sergeant on the 18th July 1916.  The promotions were "all in the
field".    Missing w.e.f. the 30th July 1916 and presumed death occurred on
that day..

CWGC - Son of Catherine Griffis of Rose Villa, Mornington Road, Sale and
the late William Alfred Griffis.

Commemorated on the family grave in Sale (Brooklands) Cemetery.   Died at
the Battle of Gullemont part of the Battle of the Somme 1916.

His father died in 1921, aged: 84 and his mother was still residing on
Mornington Road in 1939, she died in 1948, aged: 80.
