Born during the March quarter 1889 in the Leeds R.D. - ref: 9b/549, the son
of Charles & Emily Louisa Riley (nee Johnson).   The birth was registered
in the name of ROWLAND Riley, not ROLAND.

The family moved from Leeds to Ashton on Mersey in 1890.

1891 Census - Hollins Grove, Barkers Lane, Ashton on Mersey.    Son - aged:
2 - born: Leeds.     Head of household - Charles Riley - Married - aged: 35
- occ: Woolen Buyer - born: Blackburn, Lancashire.   Also Emily Riley -
Wife - aged: 35 - born: Leeds.  Plus 3 elder sisters and 1 younger brother.

His father - Charles died in 1897, aged: 41.

1901 Census - Cheadle School - Pupil Foundationer - aged: 12 - born: Leeds,
Yorkshire.  His widowed mother - Emily Louisa Riley - aged: 45 - born:
Leeds and 2 elder and 2 younger siblings were then residing at "Ivy Bank",
Wythenshawe Road, Sale.   [ROWLAND]

This was the Manchester Warehouse and Clerks Foundation School for orphaned
children of warehousemen and clerks only.

1911 Census - 94 Cross Street, Ashton on Mersey.    Son - Unmarried - aged:
22 - occ: Butchers Assistant - born: Leeds, Yorkshire.     Head of
household - Emily Louise Riley - Widow - aged: 55 - born: Leeds.     Also -
a younger brother and sister, both born at Sale.   [ROLAND]

In 1910, he joined the Army Service Corps.   When War was declared he was
stationed in England and was posted France on the 16th August 1914 with the
153rd Horse Transport Coy.

At some point in November 1917, he was wounded and admitted to the No.13
Casualty Clearing Station at Arneke, France where he died of his wounds.

Spelt ROWLAND on St. Mary's P.C. Memorial.
