Born Sydney Fallows Gregory during the June quarter 1891 in the Wem R.D. - ref: 6a/730, the adopted son of Alfred & Mary Downes. 1901 Census - Little Severn Hall, Astley Abbots, Bridgnorth, Shropshire. Listed as 'Nephew' - aged: 9 - born: Prees, Shropshire. Head of household - Alfred Downes - Married - aged: 39 - occ: Stock Man on Farm - born: Stretton, Shropshire. Also Mary Downes - Wife - aged: 45 - born: Prees, Shropshire. Plus 3 Downes children aged 14 down to 11. 1911 Census - No Trace. His adopted parents were then residing at 55 Cheshire Street, Drayton in Hales, Shropshire. Killed on the last day of the Battle of Messines. The 11th Battalion served with the 25th Division under the orders of the ANZACs just to the north of Messines. |
