Trafford

Born during the September quarter 1887 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/881,
the son of Godfrey & Mary Annie Goodliffe (nee Elliott).

1891 Census - No Trace.

1901 Census - 29 Walmer Street, Salford.    Son - aged: 13 - occ: Telegraph
Messenger - born: Manchester.    Head of household - Listed as George
Goodliffe - Married - aged: 42 - occ: Railway Porter - born: St. Helens,
Lancashire..  Also - Mary A. Goodliffe - Wife - aged: 40 - born:
Northampton.   Plus 4 siblings, that includes James & John Thomas, also
killed during WW1.

1911 Census - Fairy Lane, Sale.   Son - aged: 23 - occ: Armature Winder
(worker) - born: Hulme, Manchester.   Head of household - Godfrey Goodliffe
- Married - aged: 45 - occ: Scavenger for UDC - born: Seaton, Rutland. 
Also - Mary Ann Goodliffe - Wife - aged: 46 - born: Hold, Buckinghamshire. 
Plus 3 younger siblings, that includes James & John Thomas, also killed
during WW1.  Godfrey & Mary Ann had 7 children, 2 of whom had died of
natural causes.

Employed at Mather & Platt, Park Works, Newton Heath.   Commemorated on
their Employees Roll of Honour that states he served in the 9th Battalion,
East Lancashire Rgt.

Enlisted on the 4th September 1914.   MIC - drafted to (1) = France on
05/09/1915.  Awarded the 15 Star, the BWM & the VM.

The 29/10/1915 edition of the local newspaper reproduces a witty letter
that he wrote about football.

The 24/03/1916 edition of the local newspaper reports that he is now sick
in hospital at Birmingham.

The 17/08/1917 edition of the local newspaper confirms his death.   See
also the 24/08/1917 edition of the local newspaper.  Listed in the Guardian
Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1918.

Lance Corporal Gurnhill wrote - "We had just started our advance when
Charlie was hit by a bullet and died a few minutes later.

Commemorated on the private family gravestone in Sale Cem.

His father, Godfrey died 04/07/1931 aged 66 years and his mother, Mary Ann
died 04/02/1949 aged 87 years.  According to a member of the family, his
mother was always very bitter (not without good cause) about the loss of
her three sons.  Their eldest son - William Godfrey Goodliffe died in 1953,
aged: 69.

His mother was the first person to lay a wreath on the Sale Cenotaph when
it was unveiled.

CWGC - Son of Godfrey and Mary Ann Goodliffe of Fairy Lane, Sale,
Cheshire.

His brothers, James & John Thomas also died on active service.
