Born during the June quarter 1883 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/186, the son of Benjamin & Eliabeth Brookes (nee Darlington). 1891 Census - 109 Northenden Road, Sale. Son - aged: 7 - Scholar - born: Sale. Head of household - Benjamin Brookes - Married - aged: 42 - occ: House Painter - born: Sale. Also - Elizabeth Brookes - Wife - aged: 56 - born: Sale. Plus 6 siblings. 1901 Census - Northenden Road, Sale. Son - aged: 17 - occ: House Painter - born: Sale. Head of household - Benjamin Brookes - Married - aged: 53 - occ: House Painter - born: Sale. Also - Elizabeth Brookes - Wife - aged: 45 - born: Audley, Staffordshire. Plus 4 siblings. His father - Benjamin Brookes died in 1904, aged: 61 and his mother - Elizabeth Brookes died in 1905, aged: 61. Married Mary Urquart during the June quarter 1908 in the Bucklow R.D. - ref: 8a/402. 1911 Census - 6 Temple Road, Sale. Head of household - Married - aged: 28 - occ: House Painter - born: Sale. Also - Mary Brookes - Wife - aged:26 - born: Widnes, Lancashire. Plus 1 boarder. Their daughter - Mary Brookes was born duuring the September quarter 1912 in the Bucklow R.D. - ref: 8a/322. A member of St. Anne's Christian Brotherhood and was well known in bowling circles. He and his brother Sapper William H. Brookes, were partners in the firm of W.& A. Brookes, Decorators of Sale. At the time of his death, his brother was in training with the Royal Engineers. He was killed instantly when a shell burst near him. The shell burst killed two others members of his gun team and wounded another four others. Death reported in the 26/10/1917 edition of the Altrincham Guardian. See also the edition dated 02/11/1917.
