Trafford

Attended Altrincham Grammar School.   Played tennis for the Timperley Club
and table tennis for St. Margaret's Institute, Altrincham.    He also
played chess for St. Margaret's and the Manchester Y.M.C.A. in which he had
the distinction of holding the Russian master, Znosko-Borovski to a draw
when he last played in this Country. Employed by H.J. Heinz Ltd.,
Manchester.

Joined the RAF in January 1940 and graduated as a fighter pilot in the USA
in 1942, but was then posted to Bomber Command.

R.A.F. Harwell - 02/37 to 09/39, Bomber Command station with 105, 107 and
226 Sqns in training. 
09/39 to 03/44, 3 Group Pool with Wellingtons, became 15 OTU 04/40. Flew
many leaflet missions to France, later bombing raids to Bremen, Cologne and
Essen. 08/40 to 09/41, Many Luftwaffe attacks on the airfield. 07/41 to
11/41, 15 OTU moved to Mount Farm while the airfield closed and new
concrete runways were built.

Flying with 15 OTU (Operational Training Unit),  they took off for a
training exercise at 10.30 hrs in a Wellington Mk III - No. X3874.   The
port engine lost power and the a/c dived down at 11.15 hrs just east of
Didcot, in an area known as Fleet Meadow, situated just to the SW of Hadden
Hill Golf Club.   Sgt. Chipman was buried at Harwell, whilst the remainder
of the 5 man crew were buried in their home towns.

J. Gannon,  Sgt. J.E. Siddell and Sgt. J. Carver.
