Trafford

Attended Seamons Moss School.    A keen footballer, cricketer and swimmer
and a member of the Bowdon Boy Scouts.    Employed in the office at George
Richards, Broadheath.

Both he and his father, volunteered for Home Guard duties the day that
Anthony Eden made the radio appeal for such volunteers.   His father, was a
sergeant in the Home Guard.

He volunteered for the RAFVR on his 19th birthday and gained his "wings" on
02/07/41.     His first bombing raid was on the 02/09/41 and it was whilst
on his second bombing mission on the 07/09/41, that he failed to return. 
His last radio message was "Am over the North Sea".

Flying with 102 Sqn, they took off at 20.34 hours from RAF Topcliffe,
Yorkshire in a Whitley Mk5 - number Z6574 DY-B for a bombing mission to
Hüls, Germany where synthetic Rubber Buna was made.   The a/c came down in
the North Sea, some 60 miles ENE of Bircham Newton, Norfolk.      The five
man crew were all killed and are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.   
 They were:- Pilot Officer J.R. Croucher;  Sgt. H.L.B. Morphett RAAF; 
Flt/Sgt A.L. Halsey RCAF;  Flt/Sgt J. Glover RCAF and Sgt J.R. Tugman
