There is some confusion over his name - the local memorials (St. Peter's & Altrincham Grammar School's) list him as "H.W. Leeman". The local newspapers list him the same. Whereas the CWGC and the RAF list him as "Harold Woodrow" - no mention of surname "Leeman". A mystery. I cannot find a birth registration for a Harold Leeman, only one for a Harold Woodrow - born during the March quarter 1923 - Northwich R.D. - ref: 8a/372 - If this is correct, then his mother's maiden name was Simpson. That would make him the son of Charles E. & Mary Woodrow (nee Simpson) who married at Northwich in 1920. Flying in a Mark 1 Lancaster bomber, No. ED316 with 1656 Conversion Unit, they took off from RAF Lindholme on the 17th January 1943 for an operation over Berlin. They were lost without trace. The pilot was a New Zealander and, with the exception of Sgt Woodrow, all the others Australians. By 1946 his Mother & Tommy ??? were at Sheffield. That would be his brother - Thomas T. Woodrow born in 1924. Acceptance of his death reported in the 18/01/1946 edition of the Sale & Stretford Guardian. |
