Attended Wadham House School, where he created a record of being in the top
form for 4 years and Head Boy for 2 years. He was also Captain of the
School's football, hockey and cricket teams.   In 1933 he won a scholarship
to go to Oundle School and in 1936, went to Sidney Sussex College,
Cambridge. where he won a Natural Sciences Tripos Part 1. with 1st class
honours in 1939.   He had College colours for rugby and squash rackets.  
He obtained his B.A. (Cantab.) degree in March 1941.

He held a civil flying 'A' licence, that he obtained as a member of the
Civil Air Guard and joined the RAF in October 1939.    In August 1940, he
was summoned for interview at the Colonial Office and offered the post of
Administrative Officer, Tanganyika Territory.   In Tanganyika, he learned
that anyone with previous RAF service could re-join and so went to Nairobi,
Kenya to re-join the RAFVR.   He was posted to Coastal Command flying
Hudson Bombers.

His parents were formerly of "Brereton", Arthog Rd, Hale.
