Attended Altrincham Grammar School. Joined the RAF as a Cadet in 1937 and spent 18 months at RAF Cranwell before war broke out but was invalided out of the service. He re-joined in September 1939 and had completed 57 missions. Crew of Stirling No. R9320 on a mine-laying operation to the Baltic. He was shot down in the sea, 3 of the crew were drowned. Two aircraft and nine crew members were lost. His father, John Thomas, had a hairdressing establishment on Stamford New Rd, Altrincham. 22/05/42 edition of the local newspaper reports him as being missing - also photo. Listed as Michael in the RoH section of local newspaper. |
