of William Henry & Ayton Gatward (nee Welz)

1911 Census - Police Station Tottenham Lane, Hornsey, Middlesex.   Son -
aged:5 - born: Fulham, London.   Head of household - William Gatward -
Married - aged: 43 - occ: Police Inspector - born: Barking, Essex.   Also
Ayton Gatward - Wife - aged: 36 - born: Bermondsey, London.  Plus 6
siblings.

1921 Census - 17, Bryant Avenue, Southend on Sea, Essex.    Visitor - aged:
16 - occ: Engineer at Spong,  Braemer Road, South Tottenham.     Staying at
this address with his elder sister.,    His parents were now residing at
30, Bruce Grove, Tottenham, Middlesex.  His father has now retired from the
Police Service and is recorded as an Inspector with the N.S.P.C.C.

1939 National Registration - No Trace of Frederick nor of Mary Edna; 
presumably he was already serving.   His parents were residing with
Frederick's elder brother at 125 Powys Lane, Palmers Green, Middlesex.  His
father now listed as a Retired Police Inspector.

Married - Mary Edna R. Wood During the September quarter 1933 in the
Edmonton R.D. - ref: 3a/2221.

By 1944, 500 Royal Marine officers and 12,500 Marines had become landing
craft crew and 2/3 of all LCA's on D Day were manned by Royal Marines
carrying British, American, and Canadian troops ashore.    Marines,
renowned as expert riflemen, played a vital role reminiscent of the days of
the sailing Navy when sharpshooters were sent to the “fighting tops.”
Stationed high in the superstructures of the invasion fleet, Marine
riflemen exploded floating mines in the path of the ship.
