Welsted (neƩ Berry). 1881 Census - 24 Ann Street, Ratcliff, Middlesex. Son - aged: 7 - Scholar - born: Ratcliff. Head of household - Charles Welsted - Married - aged: 33 - occ: Mariner - born: Malden, Essex. Also - Catherine Welsted - Wife - aged: 31 - born: Kennington, Surrey. Plus 2 younger sisters. 1891 Census - 51 Copenhagen Place, Limehouse, Middlesex. Son - aged: 17 - occ: Shop Porter - born: Ratcliff, Middlesex. Head of household - Charles Welsted - Married - aged: 43 - occ: Rigger - born: Malden, Essex. Also - Catherine Welsted - Wife - aged: 41 - born: Stoke Newington, Middlesex. Plus 5 younger siblings. He married Eliza Emily Miller during the December quarter 1893 in the Mile End R.D. - ref: 1c/706. 1901 Census - 28 Butchers Row, Ratcliff, Middlesex. Plus 2 Boarders. 1939 National Registration - 78 Stanley Road, Stretford. Charles J. Welsted - Married - born: 23rd July 1873 - occ; Joiner (Heavy Worker). Elena E. Welsted - Married - born: 10th June 1874 - occ: Unpaid Domestic Duties. Irene L. Welsted - Single - born: 4th January 1921 - occ: Packer Manufacturing Clerk. A Charles & Barbara Welsted also resided at this address. The 1939/40 Voters lists reveal that Charles J. Welsted did reside at 78 Stanley Road, along with Barbara Emily Welsted and Grace Barbara Welsted. A Labourer, he died at Salford Royal Infirmary. Stanley Road was bombed on the 23rd December, so it would seem likely that he died in Salford Infirmary of injuries sustained on the 23rd December 1940. Killed when a land mine landed on Stanley Road, Old Trafford. This was the worst single incident in terms of loss of life in the whole of Greater Manchester during WW2. In total, thirty three persons were killed. The remaining family was rehoused at 30 St Hilda's Road, adjacent to Seymour Park, Old Trafford. Buried 02/01/1941 - Burial No. 17,911. His wife, Eliza Emily died 10/11/1957 aged 83 years. Their gravestone confirms that he was aged 67 years. NOT COMMEMORATED BY THE CWGC, NOR IN THE STRETFORD BOROUGH WW2 MEMORIAL BOOK. |
