Born on the 21st October 1917, the birth being registered during the
December quarter 1917 in the Dorchester R.D. - ref:5a/428, the son of
Matthew John Vickers & Julia Annie Mearns (nee Chaldicott).

1921 Census - Mill House, Maiden Newton, Dorchester, Dorset.   Son - aged:
4 - born: Maiden Newton, Dorset.   Head of houshold - MathewJohn Vickers
Mearns - Married - aged: 47 - occ: Self employed Miller & Farmer - born:
Cluny, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.   Also Julia Annie Mearns - Wife - aged: 36
- occ: Home Duties - born: Weymouth, Dorset.   Plus 5 elder siblings.

Married Zena Betty Mearns (nee White) during the December quarter 1941 in
the Sturminster R.D. - ref: 5a/722.  They resided at Castle Carey,
Somerset.

Joined the Metro-Vicker's Company as an Outside Representative in November
1937 employed in the Lamp Sales Department of the London Office.    He is
not commemorated on the Metro-Vicker's War Memorial that was sitd at
theirmain office at Trafford Par, Manchester.  Perhaps he had left the
Company's employment befor joining the Army?

Dorset..   Mathew J.V. Meanrs - Born on the 10th October 1873 - Married -
occ: Farmer & General Haulage Contractor.   He was also a Police War
Reserve - No. 244/12307.   Julia A. Mearns - Born on the 16th July 1883 -
Married - occ: Unpaid Domestic Duties.   Mabel K. Mearns - Born on the 2nd
July 1908 - occ: General Clerk.    Victor C. Mearns - Born on the 4th March
1910 - occ: Heavy Lorry Driver.   Douglas T. Mearns - Born on the 21st
October 1917 - occ: Salesman (Electrical Shop).

Joined the Rifle Brigade in January 1940 later promoted to the rank of
Corporal and posted to North West Europe.    Died of Wounds in Normandy in
August 1944.

Death reported in the18th August 1944 edition of the Western Express
Newspaper. which stated that heand Zena resided at Lower Farm, Wooicombe,
Evershot.

CWGC - Son of Matthew John Vickers Mearns and Julia Annie Mearns; husband
