Trafford

Born on the 28th March 1925, the birth being registered during the June
quarter 1925 in the Manchester South R.D. - ref: 8d/27, the son of
Frederick & Florence Newman (nee Hall).

Attended Stretford Grammar School and is commemorated in their WW2 Memorial
Book - see "Stretford Memorials - Stretford Grammar School"

1939 National Registration - No trace, but his Parents were residing at 35
Hillingdon Road.   Frederick Newman - aged: 50 - Married - occ: Master
Chairmaker.   Florence Newman - aged: 47 - Married - occ: Unpaid Home
Duties.   Joan Booth/Howarth - aged: 16 - Single -- occ: Shorthand Typist.

When Roy left school he became an apprentice furniture maker (apprenticed
to his father, a Master Furniture Maker).

Roy Frederick Newman was the son of Frederick and Florence Newman, of
Stretford, Lancashire. He enlisted in the General Service Corps,
transferred to the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) and volunteered
for airborne forces.
Sergeant Newman successfully completed his Glider Pilot training and was
posted to B Squadron, 4 Flight, 1st Wing, The Glider Pilot Regiment, and
took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Sgt Newman was killed in action on 25 September 1944, aged 19, and was
given a field burial in a garden near the junction of Benedendorpsweg and
Kneppelhoutweg. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 22
August 1945.

The 25th September was the day of the withdrawal over the River Rhine, the
1st Wing was detailed to act as guides to the escaping troops through the
forest down to the River, all the time coming under heavy German fire.

Killed in the Battle of Arnhem. "Operation Market Garden".   Taking off
from R.A.F. Manston, Kent - Nos. 1 & 2 Wings went in with 1,262 men;  219
of which died;  532 were evacuated;  and 511 went missing.

CWGC - Son of Frederick and Florence Newman, of Stretford, Lancashire.

His school buddy - Gordon Midgley, was also killed in this action.
