Born on the 27th June 1910, the birth being registered during the September
quarter 1910 in the Ulverston R.D. - ref: 8e/684, the eldest son of
Harrison & Annie Burns (nee Ellwood) who later resided at Hillside, Newby
Bridge, Ulverston, Cumbria.

1911 Census - Ivy Lodge, Grange over Sands, Lancashire.   Son - aged: 9
months - born: Cartmel, Lancashire.    Head of Household - Harrison Burns -
Married - aged: 24 - occ: Gardener (Domestic) - born: Bolton, Lancashire. 
Also his wife - Annie Burns - aged: 21 - born: Hawkshead, Lancashire.

One of six Police Officers killed when a Land Mine fell onto the East Union
Street Police Station, Old Trafford  on the first night of the Manchester
Christmas Blitz.    Four were killed instantly - two died a few days
later.

His address was given as 45 Broadgate, Preston, but he was residing locally
at 14 Milner Street, Old Trafford.

1939 National Registration - "Holme Mead", Lindle Lane, Preston.  John H.
Burns - Single - born: 27th June 1910 - occ: Police Constable.  Archibald
F. Hordern - Single - born: 15th June 1889 - occ: Chief Constable of
Lancashire.  In total, 9 persons at this address, including a retired Vice
Admiral !  This was a Lancahire Constabulary building.

CWD Report No.25 which states that he was single and had 13 rounds of
ammunition on him.   Died as a result of blast and falling debris, his body
was recovered at 07.30 hrs on the 23rd December 1940 and taken to the City
Road Mortuary, Old Trafford and identified by a friend - B. Spencer, to
whom the body was released for burial.

Death registered in Stretford Borough and buried at Finsthwaite on
26/12/1940.   Commemorated on the Stretford Constabulary Memorial, but not
in the Stretford WW2 Memorial Book.
