On leaving Exhibitioner Sutton Valance School, he went to Cambridge
University.

Sgt Burton was piloting a Mark III Wellington bomber - No. BJ823 on a
training exercise with 16 OTU - (Operational Training Unit).  He took off
at 0421 hours from Upper Heyford Airfield, Oxfordshire for high level
bombing practice over the Preston Cape ranges.  Twelve minutes after
take-off the aircraft dived and crashed near Culworth, 16 miles south-west
of Northampton, exploding on impact.   The five man crew - Sgt. R. Hart, 
Sgt. D.G. James,  Sgt. L. Blunt,  and Sgt. E. McCarthy, were all killed
instantly.
