Born during the September quarter 1894 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref:
8a/161, the son of John & Elizabeth Hughes.

1901 Census - No Trace.   

1911 Census - No Trace.

Hughes's are listed as living at both Nos. 15 & 17, Chapel Street in the
1914 & 1915 street directories and 15 & 19 in the 1916 directory.

WO363 - Attested at Chester on the 7th December 1915 and was mobilised into
the 14th Battalion, Cheshire Rgt at Chester on the 22nd March 1916.   He
was then aged: 19 years 2 months and born at Dunham Massey.  He was
residing at Ward 3, County Asylum, Chester, employed as an Asylum
Attendant.  He ws 6 feet 1 1/2 inches in height and his chest measurements
were 35 inches expanded to 38 1/2 inches.  He weighed 152 lb his next of
Kin was his father - John Hughes, Church Green, Waverton, Chester.   His
religion - Church of England.

On the 18th July 1916, he was posted to the 13th Battalion, Cheshire Rgt
and on the 23rd July into the 10th Battalion.

On the 23rd January 1917, his personal effects were to be sent to Mrs
Elizabeth Hughes, Church Green, Waverton, Chester and in due course, his
medals.  He had a half blood brother -  John Hen??? and three full blood
sisters and two half blood sisters.  In 1920, the Rector of Waverton was
John Henry Hughes?

The 10th Bn Cheshire |Rgt was part of the 7th Brigade, 25th Division. 
Their Somme offensive started at Puchevillers where they arrived at 1.00am
on 01/07 from Varennes.   From there they travelled to Forceville, Aveluy
Wood, Authuille Wood, Mersey Street and Chequer Bent Street trenches, La
Boiselle, Oviller and finally back to bivouacs just outside Albert on
15/07.   During this period there were 400 casualties from that Rgt.

To Forceville on 16/07, then Beauval on 18/07.   To Bois de Warnimont on
20/07, then to Englebelmer on 23/07.   From there they took over the
trenches from the 1st Bn Royal Dublin Fusiliers.    Relieved and to
Bus-lès-Artois on 06/08.   To Vauchelles on 11/08, then Puchevillers on
15/08.  To Hédauville on 17/08, then to dug-outs near Authuille on 18/08. 
 Relieved the 3rd Bn Worcester Rgt in Leipzig Salient on 23/08.
