Trafford

Born - Samuel Rawlinson Rustage at Tabley during the March quarter 1881 in
the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/193, possibly the son of Betsy or Elizabeth
Rustage, the eldest daughters of Robert & Esther Rustage. 

1891 Census - Manchester Road, Tabley Superior, Pickmere.   Grandson -
aged: 9 - born: Tabley, Cheshire.   Head of household - Robert Rustage -
Married - aged: 58 - occ: Agricultural Labourer - born: Tabley, Cheshire. 
Also - Esther Rustage - Wife - aged: 57 - born:Tabley, Cheshire.

1901 Census - Tollemache Arms Inn, Clotton Hoofield, Clotton.    Servant -
Unmarried - aged: 20 - occ: Stockman on Farm - born: Tabley, Cheshire.  
Farm Servant to Arnold Sherwin.

1911 Census - Knowles Pit Farm, Mere.    Servant - Unmarried - aged: 30 -
occ: Servant - born: Tabley, Cheshire.     Farm Servant to Joseph J.
Whittaker.

WO 363 - Enlisted at Altrincham on the 27th March 1916 - then aged: 35
years 10 months - he listed as his occupation: Horseman on a farm and his
addreass as: Ivy Cottage, Millington, near Knutsford, Cheshire - drafted to
France on the 16th July 1916 and joined the 10th Bn Cheshire Rgt at the
front on the 27th July 1916.     Suffered gunshot wound to his right hand
on the 3rd September 1916, but returned to duty on the 11th September
1916.

Killed during an attack on Stuff Redoubt during the Battle of the Ancre
Heights.   During this attack, 2nd Lt. William Hunter was killed and eight
other officers wounded.   137 NCO's and men were killed wounded or
missing.

He had no next of kin that could be notified, but listed a half brother -
Mr. Thomas Kinder of Heatly, Cheshire and his fiancé, Susan Bellshaw of
Millington, near Knutsford.     He had been born out of wedlock and been
brought up by his grand-parents, who were not known.   His half brother was
unsuccessfully written to at Broomedge, Lymm, Cheshire and the War Office
could not find anyone to accept his medals, etc.

Received the two basic war medals - BWM & the VM.     His MIC states that
his medals were unclaimed.
