Born during the December quarter 1883 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/163,
the son of John Blackburn & Mary Smith (nee Murray).  [A possible
alternative = September quarter 1884 - ref: 8a/161].   No middle name
recorded for either listing.  At the time of the 1881 Census, his parents
were residing at 16 Primrose Cottages, Bowdon - probably where James was
born.

1891 Census - Primrose Cottage, Bowdon (part of a row all called Primrose
Cottage).  Son listed as James B. Smith - aged: 8 - born: Bowdon.   Head of
household - John Smith - Married - aged: 47 - occ: Grocer's Van Man - born:
Wilmslow.   Also - Mary Smith - Wife - aged: 45 - born: Altrincham.  Plus 7
siblings.

Attended St. Mary's C. of E. School, Bowdon.

1901 Census - Brick Kiln  Lane, Bowdon.   Son - aged: 17 - occ: Van Boy -
born: Bowdon.   Head of household - John Smith - Married - aged: 57 - occ:
General Labourer - born: Wilmslow.   Also - Mary Smith - Wife - aged: 56 -
born: Altrincham.  Plus 1 younger sibling.

His father - John Blackburn Smith died in 1907 - aged: 63.

191 Census - 4 Primrose Cottages Vicarage Lane Bowdon.   Sone - aged: 27 -
occ: Gardener - born: Bowdon.   Head of household - Mary Smith - Widow -
aged: 66 - born: Altrincham.  Plus 1 younger sibling and 1 niece.

An active member of the Bowdon Vale Club, where he played bowls and
football.

Married Martha Brookes at St. John's P.C. Lostock Gralam, Cheshire during
the September quarter 1916 - ref: 8a/475.  Although born at Northwich in
1889, by 1911 Martha was employed as a domestic servant at 'Cheshunt', Park
Road, Hale.    No middle name recorded for James.

Death reported in the 23/11/1917 edition of the Altrincham Guardian that
states he served in the Welsh Fusiliers.

Listed as James B. Smith on the Altrincham & District Roll of Honour

Post War, his widow resided at Brook Cottage, Manchester Road, Lostock
Gralam, Cheshire.

Cannot find any references to his middle name of Blackburn apart from the
initial 'B' on 1891 Census.
