Born during the September quarter 1898 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/174, the second son of George & Agnes Jane Winstanley (nee Andrews). 1901 Census - Hale Road, Hale. (Next but one to the Unicorn Hotel). Son - aged: 2 - born: Hale. Head of household - George Winstanley - Married - aged:29 - occ: Carpenter & Joiner - born: Hale Barns. Also Ann Jane Winstanley - Wife - aged: 24 - born: Northwich, Cheshire. Plus 1 elder brother. 1911 Census - Hale Green Cottages, Grove Lane, Hale. Son - aged: 12 - Scholar - born: Hale. Head of household - George Winstanley - Married - aged:39 - occ: Joiner - born: Hale Barns. Also Ann Jane Winstanley - Wife - aged: 34 - born: Northwich, Cheshire. Plus 4 siblings. brother. Attended the Hale Unitarian School, Hale Barns, later at St. John's School, Altrincham. Employed as a Gardener to Mrs. Bradbury at Parkhill, Avenue. Formerly 23919 - Border Rgt.
