Trafford

Born during the December quarter 1891 in the Holywell R.D. - ref: 11b/205,
the son of David and Emma Elizabeth Hammond (nee Jones).  David & Emma
married in the Altrincham R.D. in 1882.

The family must have moved from Flintshire to Knutsford around 1892/93, as
the three youngest children after David were all born at Knutsford.

occ: Gardener (Domestic) - born: Knutsford, Cheshire.    Also - Emma E.

Married Annie Walters on the 26th November 1916 at St. Mary's P.C., Flint
during the December quarter 1916 in the Holywell R.D. - ref: 11b/303.

I am most grateful to Neil Drum & Pete Thomas for allowing me to use
verbatim the following extract from their superb 623 page book "A District
at War - Irlam & Cadishead's Part in the Great War", an incredibly detailed
and comprehensive book that is not only a credit to them, but a magnificent
memorial to the WW1 men of that district.

Served with the 12th (Service) Battalion, The Cheshire Regiment, 66th
Brigade, 22nd Division.

He was born in Flint, Wales, and his parents, David and Elizabeth Hammond,
resided at 45 Chester Road, Flint.   He had three brothers: James, Robert
and William and two sisters: Elizabeth Emma and Ellen.   In early 1916
David was living at The Green, Partington and was employed within the Irlam
and Cadishead district as a labourer.    He enlisted at Hulme Town Hall,
near Manchester, on 26th February 1916 and was described as 23 years 11
months old, 5 foot 5 inches tall, with a ruddy complexion, blue eyes and
brown hair. On 27th March he was posted to the Army Reserve.   On 20th
September 1916, he was mobilized and next day he was posted to the 3rd
Battalion, Cheshire Regiment, joining the battalion on the 22nd September.

On 26th November 1916, he married Annie Walters at St Mary's Church, Flint.
  Annie went to live with David's parents (by 1919 she was living at 28
York Street, Altrincham).    On 13th January 1917 he was posted overseas
and on 3rd May posted to the 12th Cheshire's.   Whilst serving in Greece,
David was hit by shrapnel in the chest and died of wounds in the 31st
Casualty Clearing Station on Tuesday, 29th May 1917, aged 24.   He is
buried in the Sarigol Military Cemetery at Kriston, Greece. The town of
Sarigol is a village some 40 kilometres north of the town of Thessalonika,
in the direction of Lake Doiran.    He is commemorated on the St Mary's
Parish Church (Partington) War Memorial but is not listed on the Irlam and
Cadishead War Memorial.   His total Army service was 1 year and 93 days.
