Born during the June quarter 1899 in the Bucklow R.D. - ref: 8a/169, the
son of Arthur & Mary Eleanor Pownall (nee Crosby).

His father died during the September quarter 1898 in the Altrincham R.D. -
ref: 8a/126.

1901 Census - 36 Moss Lane, Altrincham.   Nephew - aged: 2 - born:
Altrincham.     Head of household - James W. Crosby - Married - aged: 26 -
occ: Cabinet Maker - born: Manchester.   Plus 2 brothers and 2 sisters of
James, one sister was Arthur's mother - Mary E. Pownall - Widow - aged: 31
- occ: Dressmaker - born: Sale, Cheshire and 3 of Arthuir's elder
siblings.

1911 Census - 18 Shaws Road, Altrincham.   Son - aged: Scholar - born:
Altrincham.   Head of household - Mary Eleanor Pownall - Widow - aged: 41 -
occ: Dresmaker - born: Sale, Cheshire.   Plus Mary's sister and Arthur's 3
elder siblings.

Employed by R. Howarth & Co, Dale Street, Manchester.

His mother later resided at "Booth House", Shaws Road, Altrincham (No 18
perhaps???).

Originally served in the Manchester Rgt - No. 59792, before being
transferred to the North Staffordshire Rgt.  Awarded only the Victory Medal
and the British War Medal, indicating that did not go to France until 1916,
at least.

The 1/6th Bn were part of 137th Brigade of 46th Division.  The 2/6th Bn
merged with them in July 1918. 

Local newspaper reported that he was missing since 03/10/1918 and appealing
for news of him.

The 08/10/1918 edition of the Altrincham Guardian reported him as being
missing.    From being missing, the 12/09/1919 edition of the local
newspaper confirms his death.

Commemorated in the Altrincham Roll of Honour Book.

Commemorated on the private family gravestone in St. Mary's, Bowdon.

His father, Arthur died 10/08/1898 aged 28 years and his mother, Mary
Eleanor died 04/02/1931 aged 61 years.
