Born during the June quarter 1894 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/175, the youngest son of Edward & Flora Hughes. 1901 Census - 14 Old Market Place, Altrincham. Son - aged: 6 - born: Altrincham. Head of household - Edward Hughes - Married - aged: 40 - occ: Dispensing Chemist - born: Altrincham. Also - Flora Hughes - Wife - aged: 42 - born: Ayr, Ayrshire. Plus - 5 elder siblings. 1911 Census - 14 Old Market Place, Altrincham. Son - aged: 16 - occ: Junior Clerk - born: Altrincham. Head of household - Edward Hughes - Married - aged: 50 - occ: Dispensing Chemist - born: Altrincham. Also - Flora Hughes - Wife - aged: 52 - born: Ayr, Ayrshire. Plus - 2 elder sisters. Attended Manchester Grammar School. Employed by the City of Glasgow Assurance Co, Manchester. A cricketer and hockey player - member of Timperley Cricket Club. Enlisted in the Public Schools Bn. of the RF in August 1914 and was drafted to the front in Novemeber 1915. DoW at the 33 Casualty Clearing Station at Givenchy. His death was reported in the 04/07/1916 edition of the Altrincham Guardian. Commemorated on the private family gravestone in Hale Cem. His father, Edward died 28/05/1932 and his mother, Flora died 08/09/1921. His chum Private Kingsley Brown (who was to be killed on 20/07/1916) wrote home. Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1917. Commemorated in the Altrincham & District Roll of Honour, on the Timperley Sports Club Memorial and the Manchester Grammar School Memorial. |
