Born during the March quarter 1881 in the Stockport R.D. - ref: 8a/96, the only son of Thomas & Caroline Bythway (nee Hayes). In 1881 the family was residing at "The Elms", Stockport-Etchells and is presumably where Montague was born. 1891 Census - 44 Adelaide Street, North Meols, Ormskirk, Lancashire. Son - aged: 10 - Scholar - born: Cheshire. Head of household - Thomas Bythway - Married - aged: 57 - occ: Retired Chemical Merchant - born: Also - Caroline Bythway - Wife - aged: 38 - born: Lancashire. Plus 1 domestic servant. Attended Eastbourne College and Cambridge University. 1901 Census - 44 Avondale Road, Southport. Son - aged: 20 - occ: Undergraduate - born: Cheadle. Head of household - Thomas Bythway - Married - aged: 67 - occ: Retired Chemical Merchants Assistant - born: Derby. Also - Caroline - Wife - aged: 48 - born: Leigh, Lancashire. The Times 18/06/1901 - King's College awarded him £30 for Mathmatics. The Times 28/05/1902 - Cambriidge Mathmatics (Hons). His father - Thomas, died in 1903. 1911 Census - Claremont, Hale Road, Hale. Head - Unmarried - aged: 30 - occ: Salesman of Electric Motors - born: Cheadle. Also - Caroline Bythway - Mother - Widow - aged: 57 - born: Leigh, Lancashire. Plus 1 servant. ADM 188/56/900 - He enlisted into the Royal Navy on the 13th November 1914. Served as an Electrical Engineer. He was 6 feet 0 1/4 inches in height, had a 35 1/2 inch chest. Brown hair, Brown eyes, a Fresh complexion Served on HMS Pembroke III from the 14th November 1915 to 21st March 1915, the on HMS President II from the 1st April 1915 to 9th December 1915. No record as to how he got to Malta. HMS Pembroke was the Royal Naval Barracks at Chatham. HMS President II was an accounting base, where sailors were assigned when they were between ships.
