Born during the June quarter 1875 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/663, the only son of Thomas & Mary Jane Guest (nee Heald). 1881 Census - "The Cedars", Lapwing Lane, Didsbury, Manchester. Son - aged: 6 - born: Rusholme, Manchester. Head of household - Thomas Guest - Married - aged: 38 - occ: Manufacturing Confectioner, employing 79 hands - born: Burnley, Lancashire (???). Also - Mary I. Guest - Wife - aged: 27 - born: Patricroft, Lancashire. Plus 1 elder sister and 2 domestic servants. 1891 Census - No Trace. The family home had now moved to Ashley Heath, Hale, Altrincham. His father was recorded there - Married - aged: 48 - occ: Manufacturer - born: Barnsley, Yorkshire - there were 2 domestic servants. His mother was visiting her father at West Hill, Lewisham, London at the time of this census. 1901 Census - No Trace. Presumably in South Africa? His father is now resident at "The Manor", South Downs Road, Hale, Altrincham. Married - aged: 53 - occ: Manufacturer Sugar Confectioner - born: Barnsley. His paternal aunt - Cassandra Guest - aged: 60 is also resident, plus 2 domestic servants. His mother is now resident with her brother and his wife at 103 Streatham Hill, Streatham, Wandsworth, London. She is recorded as a Visitor and as a widow, living on her own means. Married Mabel Ellen Fountain at St. Peter's P.C. Hale on the 24th September 1905. 1911 Census - 2 Chesham Place, Brighton, Sussex. Head of household - Married - aged: 36 - occ: Private Means - born: Manchester. Also - Mabel Ellen Guest - Wife - aged: 39 - born: Haigh, Yorkshire. Plus 2 domestic servants. Death reported in the 14/07/1916 edition of the Altrincham Guardian. Employed in his father's business - manufacturers of medicated lozenge, Carruthers St, Ancoats. He served throughout the South African War and had been on active service for just nine months in this war. Listed simply as Thomas Guest on the Altrincham Roll of Honour. Commemorated on a brass plaque in St. Oswald's P.C., Lower Peover, which states that he died leading his men into battle. It also states that he was the only son of Thomas Guest JP., of Manchester and the nephew of the Reverend Arthur Guest, vicar of St. Oswald’s P.C. It mentions that he had a wife. Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1917. |
