Born during the December quarter 1896 in the Barton on Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/732, the eldest son of son of Charles James & Louie Ella Hadfield (nee Leigh). They later resided at 5 Park Road, Hale. Attended Wadham House School, Hale and Manchester Grammar School. Member of Manchester Grammar School OTC. Commissioned in 1914, promoted Lieutenant in July 1915 and drafted to France. Drafted to Salonica where he fell ill with jaundice, which developed into appendicitis, that proved fatal. He died in Alexandria Hospital The late Charles James Hadfield is listed as residing at Chesham Place, Bowdon. He was a grey cloth merchant for Messrs. R. Wade & Co., George St, Manchester. The 24/03/1916 edition of the local newspaper reports that a memorial service had been held for him at the Dunham Rd Chapel. Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1917, which states that he lived at Chesham Place, Altrincham. See also the Stretford database. |
