Born during the March quarter 1881 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/178,
the second son of James & Annie Magdalene Priestner (nee Wayne).

1881 Census - 12 Hamilton Terrace, Bowdon (the last dwelling next to Sale
Cottages).   Son - aged: 3 months - born: Bowdon.    Head of household -
James Priestner - Married - aged: 30 - occ: Joiner - born: Altrincham.  
Also - Annie Priestner - Wife - aged: 26 - born: Lytham, Lancashire.   Plus
2 elder siblings.

1891 Census - Hamilton Terrace (12?) next to Primrose Cottages, Bowdon.   
Son - (listed as Melville Priestner) - aged: 10 - born: Bowdon.    Head of
household - James Priestner - Married - aged: 40 - occ: Joiner - born:
Altrincham.   Also - Annie Priestner - Wife - aged: 36 - born: Lytham,
Lancashire.   Plus 5 siblings.

His father - James, died 08/08/1896, aged: 45 years.

aged: 20 - occ: Upholsterer - born: Bowdon.    Head of household - Annie
Priestner - Wife - aged: 46 - born: Lytham, Lancashire.   Plus 6 siblings,
including his youngest brother - Arthur who also died as a result of WW1.

1911 Census - York Avenue (52?) Bowdon.   Son - aged: 30 - occ: Upholsterer
- born: Bowdon.   Head of household - Annie Priestner - Wife - aged: 56 -
born: Lytham, Lancashire.   Plus 2 siblings, that included his youngest
brother - Arthur who also died as a result of WW1.

Married Eveline Fletcher on the 20th March 1916, the marriage being
registered during the March quarter 1916 in the Bucklow R.D. - ref: 8a/381.
 They had a daughter - Agnes M Priestner born during the June quarter 1917.
 By then Eveline was residing with her parents at 19, Alexandra Road,
Burton-on-Trent, where Agnes' birth was registered.

Formerly 21941 - North Staffordshire Rgt.     His MIC states that his
Labour Corps number was 426727.  Awarded only the BWM & the VM.

Killed instantly by a shell burst.   His death was reported in the
29/03/1918 edition of the Altrincham Guardian.    See also the 05/04/1918
edition of the local newspaper.

Commemorated on the private family gravestone in St. Mary's, Bowdon. Grave
No. 3484.   His father - James, died 08/08/1896, aged: 45 years and his
mother, Annie Magdeline Preistner died, 08/01/1932, aged: 76 years.

Annie Magdeline Priestner's parents were William Wayne of Bowdon who died,
20/05/1883, aged: 65 years and Ann Wayne, who died: 28/04/1884, aged: 63
years.

His brother Arthur died 03/12/1920, aged: 24 years and is buried at St.
Mary's P.C. Bowdon.

His mother - Annie Magdeline Priestner, received financial support from the
"John Sington Fund".

Pension Records - Dependent - Widow - Eveline Priestner, 19 Alexandra Road,
Burton upon Trent.  Eveline was born on the 16th May 1887.  Their daughter
- Agnes Marjorie was born on the 2nd June 1917.    Awarded a Grant of £5
on the 16t  April 1918 and a weekly pension of 21/8d w.e.f. the 23rd
September 1918, later increased to 30/-

His widow placed a notice to him under "Roll of Honour" in the Burton
Observer dated 22nd March 1919.



 
The John Sington Fund - John Sington was the son of Adolphus Sington, a
Jewish Prussian shipping merchant who came to Britain and in 1845 became a
naturalized citizen.   Adolphus had his own company, involved originally in
the production of linen and cotton, and later the import and export of
machinery for the cotton industry.  John and at least one of his brothers
worked in their father's business in Princess Street, Manchester.

In 1885 John Sington married Mildred Campbell Maclure, daughter of Sir John
William Maclure, Bt., who became MP for Stretford the following year.  John
and Mildred had two sons, Alan John Campbell Sington and Edward Claude
Sington.  In 1914 both sons enlisted in the British Army, and their father
is listed in The Gazette in 1915 as Major John Sington, Royal Engineers
Territorial Force Reserve.   In 1909 the Sington family moved from Whalley
Range to Dunham House, on Charcoal Road, Dunham.
