Trafford

Born on the 8th May 1867 at Annan, Dumfries, Scotland, the son of John
Niven and Nicholos Arnold (nee Irving).

1871 Census - Blacknowe, Dumfries, Scotland.  Son - aged: 3 - born: Annan,
Dumfries, Scotland.  Head of household - John N. Arnold - Married - aged:
27 - occ: Tailor - born: Cummertrees, Dumfriesshire.   Also Nicolas Arnold
- Wife - aged: 25 - born: Annan, Dumfriesshire.  Plus 1 younger brother.

1881 Census - 17 Paddock Street, Arwick.   Boarder - aged: 13 - occ: Errand
Boy - born: Scotland.   Not 100% happy with this reference.

1882 - Entered the Royal Navy.

1891 Census - No Trace.

Married - Hannah Unwin during the June quarter 1895 in the Chorlton R.D. -
ref: 8c/990.

1901 Census - 19 Station Road, Portsmouth.  Presumably John is at Sea or
overseas.   Head of household - Hannah Arnold - Married - aged: 29 - born:
Manchester.   Also their daughter - Grace Arnold - aged: 3 - born:
Portsmouth.  Plus John's mother - Martha Fletcher.

Entered the Royal Navy when he was only 15 years of age (1882) and after 23
years of service (1905) was pensioned.  He was then engaged as a Messenger
with William Deacons Bank at Manchester.   His wife was employed by the
Bank as a Caretaker of the Broadheath Branch.

1911 Census - 105 Manchester Road, Broadheath.  Head - Married - aged: 43 -
occ: Naval Pensioner (Bank Porter) for William Glynn's Bank - born: Annan,
Dumfries, Scotland.   Also - Hannah Arnold - Wife - aged: 39 - born:
Manchester.   Plus all 5 of their five children.  The first 3 were born at
Portsmouth 1898 - 1902 - 1904.  The 4th & 5th were born at Altrincham 1908
- 1910, indicating that he retired from the Navy c1906.

He had received medals for the bombardment of Alexandria and had been
awarded the Khedive's Star.   This would indicate that he also received an
Egypt Campaign Medal (1882-1889).   He also served in the Anglo-Boer War
(1899-1902).

He re-enlisted at the outbreak of war in August 1914 and was serving on
H.M.S. Renown.  His number being - 120670. (R.F.R.PO.A.1580) (Po)     

He died suddenly onboard the H.M.S. Hospital Ship "Soudain" situated in the
North Sea.  His death being reported in the 08/02/1918 edition of the
Altrincham Guardian.

Buried 05/02/1918 - Burial No. 3,811.  M.I. (Altrincham) "May his reward be
as great as his sacrifice".

He left a widow and two daughters.  His widow - Hannah Arnold, died on
27/11/1947 aged 77 years.
