Born during the December quarter 1898 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. - ref:
8c/712, the eldest son of Joseph & Annie Sidney Smith (nee Jones). 
Actually born in September 1898.

1901 Census - 6 Nansen Street, Stretford.   Son - aged: 2 - born: Hulme,
Manchester.   Head of household - Joseph Smih - Married - aged: 33 - occ:
Railway Engine driver - born: Hulme.  Also - Annie Smith - Wife - aged: 32
- born: Hulme.   Plus 1 elder sister and 1 boarder.

1911 Census - 39 Taylors Road, Stretford.   Son - aged: 12 - born:
Manchester.   Head of household - Joseph Smih - Married - aged: 44 - occ:
Railway Engine driver - born: Hulme.  Also - Annie Sidney Smith - Wife -
aged: 42 - born: Hulme.   Plus 1 elder sister, 2 younger brothers and 1
boarder.

His father worked on the Cheshire Lines Railway whose Depot was close to
Manchester United's Ground.

Enlisted on the 2nd September 1916.   The cap badge on his photograph
appears to be an East Yorkshire Regiment one ???

Harold was discharged from the Army on the 4th June 1918 as no longer being
fit for war service.

At the time of his discharge, he was residing at 25 Burleigh Street, Gorse
Hill, Stretford.  He was then aged: 19 and stood 5 feet 3 inches in height.
 His chest measurement was 32 inches fully expanded with a 4 inch
expansion.   He was described as having a Fair complexion, Hazel eyes and
Brown hair.  He was by trade a Clerk.  His Character was recorded as being
"Sober and hard working".   It also states that his "Disability is
aggravated by ?????"

He had completed 165 days "At Home" in the Army Reserve from the 2nd
September 1916 until the 14th February 1917.  He then served for 1 year and
111 days "At Home" in the Labour Corps.

He was granted a pension in  respect of "962. Eczema".  This was described
as (a) Right temporal and malar region covered with eczematous infection. 
Also left malar region, also part of it in his ear.  Appears to be
subsiding.   (b) Occasional scattered sporetic and rales in chest.  Heart
beat diffuse and slightly out.   It was stated that he would have 20%
disablement for the next 6 months.   As Chelsea Pensioner No. GN6K 17299,
he was awarded a pension of 5/6d per week, for 43 weeks.

Harold died of Influenza and pneumonia and was buried with his parents in
Stretford Cemetery on the 5th March 1919.   M.I. - "Until the morning
dawns".  His mother - Annie Sidney Smith died on the 4th March 1955, aged:
86 years and father - Joseph Smith, died on the 4th September 1958, aged:
91.
