Born during the June quarter 1868 in the Chichester R.D. - ref: 2b/341, the son of Joseph Cheesman & Harriett Sales (nee Downs). 1871 Census - 67 East Street, Chichester, Sussex. Son - aged: 3 - born: Chchester, Sussex. Head of household - Joseph Cheeseman Sales - Married - aged: 34 - occ: Tea Dealer, employing 1 man & 2 boys - born: Fishlake, Yorkshire. Also Harriet Sales - Wife - aged: 30 - born: Chelsea, Middlesex. Plus 5 siblings. 1881 Census - East Street, Chichester, Sussex. Son - aged: 13 - Scholar - born: Chichester, Sussex. Head of household - Joseph Cheeseman Sales - Married - aged: 44 occ: Grocer - born: Fishlake, Yorkshire. Also - Harriet Sales - Wife - aged: 40 - born: Chelsea, Middlesex. Plus 7 siblings. 1891 Census - Preston Cavalry Barracks, Shoreham, Sussex - aged: 20 - occ: Private in the 6th Dragoons - born: Chichester. (Preston is a village adjoining the north-east suberbs of Brighton along the Lewes Road out of Briighton). His parents were then residing at 35, Queens Road, Portsmouth. Married Edith Ann Brown, daughter of William & Mary Ann Brown during the December Qtr 1897 at Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/1070. She was born on the 21st October 1868.His son - Arthur Downs Sales, who was born during the June Qtr 1899 at Barton on Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/714, was killed in action on the 2nd September 1918 and is buried at Messines Ridge British Cemetery, Belgium. Commemorated on the family gravestone in Stretford Cemetery - U.61/62. 1901 Census - His widow - Edith Ann Sales was living with her mother at 154 Duke Street, Stretford - listed as a widow, aged: 32 with her son Arthur Downs Sales, aged: 1 year. By 1911, his widow was residing with their son Arthur at 24 Langshaw Street, Old Trafford. William's name appears on the memorial of all those soldiers who were exhumed in the district and were reinterred in the Colesberg cemetery. The cemetery is located on the the northern side of the town. Entitled to the QSA Medal with Cape Colony clasp. Edith Ann Sales (nee Brown) lost her husband in South Africa (ABW) and her son in France (WW1). She died on the 6th August 1958, aged: 89. |
