Born during the September quarter 1881 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/633, the eldest son of Cllr. Isaac & Anne Hinchliffe (nee Gelder) In 1881 his parents were residing at 38 Dudley Street, Stretford. Isaac Hinchliffe - Head of household - Married - aged: 25 - occ: Printer Compositor - born: Penistone, Yorkshire. Also - Anne Hinchliffe - Wife - aged: 23 - born: Dodworth, Yorkshire. There was also a 33 year old salesman boarding with them. [Probably where Oliver was born?] 1891 Census - 74 Cornbrook Road, Stretford. Son - aged: 9 - Scholar - born: Stretford. Head of household - Isaac Hinchliffe - Married - aged: 35 - occ: Printer's Manager and Traveller - born: Penistone, Yorkshire. Also Anne Hinchliffe - Wife - aged: 33 - born: Dodworth, Yorksire. Plus 1 younger sister and 1 younger brother. His other - Anne Hinchliffe died in 1896, aged: 38. 1901 Census - 112 Cyprus Street, Stretford. Son - aged: 19 - occ: Printer's Apprentice - born: Stretford. Head of household - Isaac Hinchliffe - Widower - aged: 45 - occ: Master Printer - born: Penistone, Yorkshire. Plus 2 younger sisters and 1 domestic servant. His father - Isaac Hinchliffe married - Mary Constance Huxley in 1902. 1911 Census - 24 Spring Road, Hale. Boarder - aged: 29 - occ: Printer's Manager - born: Penistone, Yorkshire ??? Residing with James & Jane Newall and family. His father and his step-mother, together with his 2 sisters and one half sister were then residing at 52 Park Road, Stretford. Employed as a Director & Secretary of Hinchliffe & Co, Manchester. Enlisted in November 1914 and drafted to the front in January 1915. WO363 - Attested at Manchester on the 7th November 1914. Born in the Parish of St. Margaret's, Manchester. He was then aged: 32 years, 5 months. He was 5 feet 7 inches in height, weighed 137 lb. His chest measurements were 32 - 34 1/2 inches. His occupation was given as - Printer and was in Lodgings. He had previously served in the 4th Volunteer Bn. Manchester Rgt (Mounted Infantry Company) - Time expired. He was posted into the 2nd Bn, Manchester Rgt on the 23rd February 1915. Next of kin given as Isaac Hinchliffe (father) and Dorothy Hinchliiffe (sister), residing at "Mardale, Park Road, Stretford. Service Record - Home - 07/11/1914 to 22/02/1915. France - 23/02/1915 to 06/06/1916. Home - 07/06/1916 to 29/06/1916. He sustained Trench Fever and was sick with a cough and expectoration and admitted into the General Hospital, Rouen, France on the 25th May 1916. Found to have severe T.B. and was repatriated to the UK and sent to Wandsworth Military Hospital, London. His medical report from the 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth was dated the 19th June 1916. It stated that his condition was brought on by Active Service caused by Strain and Exposure to infection - Tubercle Bacillus of Lungs. Recommended for Discharge as being permanently unfit. Discharged from the Army at Preston on the 29th June 1916. He was then 34 year of age, was 5 feet 8 1/2 inches in height and his chest measurements were 32 - 34 1/2 inches. He had Blue/Grey eyes, Grey hair and was a Printer by trade. His residence was 10 Tonman Street, Deansgate, Manchester. He was of Good character. Reason for discharge - "No longer physically fit for war service". His death was reported in the 20/10/1916 edition of the Altrincham Guardian and the death registered during the December quarter 1916 in the Bucklow R.D. - ref: 8a/256.
