Trafford

Born during the September quarter 1891 in the Salford R.D. - ref: 8d/29,
the son of William & Isabella Newton Lee (nee Bowes).

His parents were residing at  30 Weaste Lane, Pendleton, Salford at the
time of the 1891 Census - probably where Jack was born a few months later. 
 His elder brother - William Henry was at a boarding School at Lytham St.
Annes.

1901 Census - "Arncliffe", Middleton Road, Prestwich, North Manchester.   
Son - aged: 9 - born: Weaste, Salford.   Head of household - William Lee -
Married - aged: 53 - occ: Wholesale Clothier - born: Bolton.   Also
Isabella N. Lee - Wife - aged: 52 - born: Manchester.   Plus 6 siblings, an
aunt and 2 servants.  One of those siblings was William H. Lee - aged: 18.

Attended Buxton College.

1911 Census - No Trace.

His mother was residing at Hawthorn Lane, Wilmslow at the time of the 1911
Census.  Head - Widow - aged: 62 - occ: Private Means - born: Manchester.  
Her son - William Herbert Lee was also in residence - aged: 28 - occ:
Rubber Manufacturer - born: Manchester in 1883.  Plus - daughter - Isobel
Lee - aged: 25 and John Lee - aged: 19.

The only Jack Lee = Agnes M marriage I can find is to an Agnes M. Erskine
during the September quarter 1916 in the St. Martin R.D. (London) - ref:
1a/1107.   In 1911 an Agnes Muriel Erskine was residing with her uncle at
15 Elm Grove, Aberdare, Glamorganshire,   She was aged: 13 and born at
Glasgow in 1898.

It appears that when Jack enlisted, he gave his elder brother's name
(William Henry) as his own.   According to his WO374 file, this was later
corrected by the Army and his correct name of Jack substituted.

WO374 - Born 10th July 1891 at "The Willows, Weaste, Manchester (Salford
actually).    His occupation was given as an Assistant Buyer in a
Manchester Warehouse.

Several of his attestation, etc., documents state that his name was William
Herbert Lee.   "William Herbert" has been crossed out and the name "Jack"
inserted.    His medical report made the 24th November 1914 at Manchester
states that he was aged 23 years, 3 months;  that he was 5 feet 11¼ inches
in height;  he weighed 179 lb and had a chest measurement of 40/3 inches.  
 His boot size was 8  and his cap size 7 1/8 inches.   Enlisted as a
Private into the 1/7th Bn Manchester Rgt on the 24th November 1914 and
served until the 15th January 1915 when he received his commission.

His death report states that he was a 2nd Lieutenant (acting Captain) and
was commanding the 1/6th Bn Cheshire Rgt at the time of his death.  His
will was made on the 24th August 1916.  The gross value of his estate was
£4,721.  5.  0d.   Archibald Wood, Inglefield, Dean Row, Wilmslow,
Cheshire.

He was awarded the Military Cross and was Gazetted on the 17th September
1917.  His M.C. was "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when
commanding a raid.   His conduct throughout was of the highest order and a
splendid example to his men.   It was entirely owing to his fine leadership
that the enterprise was successfully carried out".

In July 1919 his widow had not remarried and was living at Woodside,
Wilmslow.   She married Fred G. Tattersall at Carlisle in 1924.

In 1966, a Mr. R. Tattersall, 1 Winton Court, Winton Road, Bowdon tried to
obtain information about Captain Lee from the War Office, a copy of their
reply giving basic information is on his file.
