Born during the December quarter 1889 in the Newport, Monmouth R.D. - ref:
11a/198, the son of Alexander & Ellen Oliver (nee Hazell).

1891 Census - 5 Cardiff Road, St. Woollos,  Newport, Monmouth.   Son -
aged: 1 - born: Newport.   Head of household - Alexander Oliver - Married -
aged: 38 - occ: Traveller in Drapery - born: Scotland.  Also - Ellen Oliver
- Wife - aged: 38 - born: Laycock, Wiltshire  Plus 5 elder siblings, his
maternal grandmother and 1 domestic servant.

1901 Census - 14 Clytha Park Road, Newport, Monmouthshire.  Son - aged: 11
- born: Newport.   Head of household - Alexander Oliver - Married - aged:
48 - occ: Commercial Traveller - born: Scotland.  Also - Ellen Oliver -
Wife - aged: 43 - born: Laycock, Wiltshire  Plus 5 siblings and 2 domestic
servants.

1911 Census - Peter Jackson's Farm, Mobberley, Cheshire.   Boarder - aged:
21 - occ: Salesman in Drapery Warehouse - born: Newport.   His parents are
now residing at 17 Oakfield Road, Newport.   His father - Alexander Oliver
- Married - aged: 57 - occ: Commercial Traveller (Drapery) - born: Lairg,
Sutherlandshire.   Also his mother - Ellen - Wife - aged: 53 - born:
Laycock, Wiltshire.   Plus 4 siblings and 1 domestic servant.

On the 3rd April 1913, he embarked at the port of Liverpool onto the S.S.
Baltic sailing to New York.  His final destination was Saskatchewan,
Canada.   The ship's manifest states that he was a 23 year old Salesman
from Manchester.   His next of kin was Mr. A. Oliver, 17 Oakfield Road,
Newport.  The ship arrived at New York on the 13th April 1913.   It is not
known when he returned to the UK.

MIC - states that he was a Captain serving with the 6th Bn. Manchester Rgt
and was posted to France on the 25th October 1916.  His family contact is
his mother, Barclays Bank House, Tredegar, Monmouthshire. (His father had
died in 1922).  It also states that he died of his wounds on the 24th April
1917, NOT the 21st as recorded by the CWGC, which is probably the more
reliable source.

He died at the No.10 C.C.S. (Casualty Clearing Station), Abeele, Belgium. 
The Sister in charge of the CCS wrote to Alfred's sister informing her that
Alfred had received a serious wound to his abdomen and was unconscious when
admitted and died 15 minutes later.   The nurse explains that he was buried
in the military cemetery at Remy.

SDGW also states that he died on the 24/04/1917.   Again, the CWGC record
is more likely to show the correct date.
