Trafford

Born Humphrey Kendall Evans during the March quarter 1881 in the Dolgelly
R.D. - ref: 11b/379, the son of Humphrey & Mary Ann Evans (nee Steele).  
His parents married in St. John's P.C., Manchester in 1869 and in 1871 were
residing at 14 Chorlton Grove, Stretford.

1881 Census - "Harker Lodge", Little Broughton, Cumberland.   Nephew -
aged: 1 month - born: Barmouth, Wales.  Head of household Henry Shepherd
Steele - Married - aged: 40 - occ: Banksman (Coal Pit) - born: Maryport,
Cumberland [his mother's brother].   His father was - Humphrey Evans -
(Brother in Law to Head) - Married - aged: 38 - occ: Joiner & Builder -
born: Dolgellau, Wales.   Also his mother - Mary Ann Evans - (Sister to
Head) - Married - aged: 42 - born: Maryport, Cumberland.  Plus his eldest
sister - Elizabeth Evans - aged: 6 - Scholar - born: Manchester and 2 other
elder siblings.- Joseph Evans and Kate Steel Evans.

His father - Humphrey Evans died in 1888 - aged: 45.

1891 Census - 40 King Street, Workington, Cumberland.   Son - aged: 10 -
born: Barmouth, Wales.   Head of household - Mary Ann Evans - Widow - aged:
51 - born: Maryport, Cumberland.  Plus 2 elder siblings Joseph Evans and
Kate Steel Evans.

1901 Census - 33 Christian Street, Harrington, Cumberland.   Son - aged: 19
- occ: General Labourer (Railways) - born: Barmouth, Merionethshire, Wales.
  Head of household – Margaret (sic) Ann Evans - Widow - aged: 63 - born:
Maryport, Cumberland.   Plus his elder sister - Elizabeth - aged: 28 - occ:
Charwoman - born: Manchester.

1911 Census - 2 Meter Street, Salford.  Head - aged: 30 - occ: Labourer on
Loco Dept (Railway) - born: Barmouth, Wales.   Also - Mary Evans - Mother -
Widow - aged: 71 - born: Maryport, Cumberland.   Plus his elder his sister
- Elizabeth Evans - aged: 32 - born: Manchester.

His NZDF personnel file states that his mother resided at 4 Devonshire
Street, All Saints, Manchester. (Ardwick area).  He attested at Whangarei,
NZ on the 3rd July 1917.   He was then aged: 29 years 6 months - 5 feet 2¼
inches in height - he weighed: 132 lb - his eyes were Blue - hair: Brown
and of medium complexion.  He had a tattoo on his right patella.   He had
resided in NZ for the past 7 years and was employed as a Labourer at the
Portland Cement Company, Whangarei.

After training he was posted overseas, leaving Wellington on the 13th
October 1917, arriving at Liverpool on the 8th December 1917 and sent to
Sling Camp (an annexe to Bulford Camp on Salisbury Plain).   On the 12th
February 1918 he was charged with overstaying his leave from 19.00 hrs on
the 11th until 14.30 hrs on the 12th.   He was to forfeit 14 days pay, 

Posted to France on the 20th March 1918 and arrived at Etaples Base on the
24th..  Joined the 10th Company, 2nd Battalion, Otago Rgt on the 14th April
1918.   

Admitted into the 2nd NZ F.A. (Field Ambulance) on the 24th April 1918,
suffering from a scalded left foot.  A note on his file from his C.O.
states that he was on duty at the time of his scalding and was not to blame
for the incident.

Sent back to the 29th C.C.S. (Caualty Clearing Station) on the 24th and
back the same day to the 18th General Hospital at Camiers, France. (just
north of Etaples).   Transferred to England on the 27th April 1918, where
he was admitted into the 2nd NZ General Hospital at Walton upon Thames.  No
longer fit for active service after scalding his foot, he embarked at
Southampton for NZ on the 28th August 1918.  Transferred onto the hospital
ship - S.S. Maheno at Marseilles.    Due to his injuries, he was discharged
from the NZ Army on the 19th November 1918 with a S.W.B. (Silver War Badge)
indicating that he he was no longer fit for service.  My thanks to the NZ

Died during the March quarter 1929 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. - ref:
8c/1174 - aged: 47.

The CWGC records state - "There is also buried in this cemetery....." and
the 6th Feb 1929 is correct.    Their records state that there are 35 x 1st
W.W. war graves in this cemetery, but including Private Evans there is
actually 36.  So, his is not classed as a war grave (it is certainly well
outside of their date parameters).

It is standard NZ practice to bury ex-servicemen in the military section of
a cemetery and give them a military style headstone, even though they died
well outside of any conflict dates.
