Born on the 25th September 1899, during the December quarter 1899 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref:8a/171, the second son of John & Annie Morton (nee Smethurst). 1901 Census - 51 Sinderland Road, Dunham Massey. Son - aged: 1 - born: Dunham Massey. Head of household - John Morton - Married - aged: 31 - occ: Engine Fitter at Linotype - born: Salford. Also Annie Morton - Wife - aged: 31 - born: Pendleton. Plus 1 elder brother. 1911 Census - 51 Sinderland Road, Dunham Massey. Son - aged: 11 - Scholar - born: Dunham Massey. Head of household - John Morton - Married - aged: 42 - occ: Engine Fitter at Linotype - born: Salford. Also Annie Morton - Wife - aged: 42 - born: Salford. Plus 1 elder brother. Member of St. Margaret's Choir. Librarian and Secretary of St. Margaret's Guild. Patrol Leader to "Lady Leigh's Own Troop" of Boy Scouts". Employed as an Apprentice Fitter at George Kearns Ltd., Altrincham. His RAF Record Card states that he enlisted for the duration of the War on the 25th July July 1918. He was then aged: 18 years 10 months and described as a Fitter. NoK - his father John Morton Snr, 37 Harcourt Road, Altrincham. He was 5 feet 5 inches in height - chest measurement - 31½ inches - eyes: Blue - hair: Brown - complexion: Fresh - he had a scar on his right forearm. He died in the Aylesbury Military Hospital of Bronco Pneumonia, after only 24 hours illness. (from Influenza ???). Buried 24/08/18 - Burial No. 3,948. The coffin bearers were from the military camp at Sinderland. Death reported in the 23/08/1918 edition of the Alttrincham Guardian. Commemorated on the private family gravestone in Hale Cem. His father, John died 01/02/1955 aged 85 years and his mother, Annie died 20/12/1949 aged 81 years. |
