Born during the December quarter 1892 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/906, the only son of Henry & Fannie Beales (nee Rains). 'Fannie' is her birth registration spelling - on other records it is spelt 'Fanny'. At the time of the 1891 Census, his parents were residing at 28 Yarburgh Street, Moss Side, Manchester - probably where Henry Jnr. was later born. His father was a Button Manufacturer and Agent. His father's button business was at 16 Spear Street, Manchester. 1901 Census - 28 Yarburgh Street, Moss Side, Manchester. The family are recorded as BALES. Son - aged: 8 - born: Manchester. Head of household - Henry Bales - Married - aged: 55 - occ: Button & Trimmings Agent - born: North Lapham, Norfolk. Also Fanny Bales - Wife - aged: 36 - born: Manchester. Plus 1 elder sister and 1 servant. His father - Henry Beales Snr. died in 1909 - aged: 63. 1911 Census - 28 Yarburgh Street, Moss Side, Manchester. Son - aged: 18 - occ: Button Salesman - born: Manchester. Head of household - Fanny Bales - Widow - aged: 36 - born: Manchester. Plus 1 elder sister. At the time of his enlistment in March 1916, he was employed by Merrs. A Coker & Co. Liverpool & Manchester. He passed through the Cadet School, Cambridge to obtain his commission. According to his MIC, he was a Private in the Manchester Rgt - No. 31218, progressing to Training Reserve Battalion - No. TR/3/28900, before being commissioned into the York & Lancaster Rgt as a 2nd Lieutenant on the 24th January 1917. Two addresses are given for his mother - the first 28 Yarburgh St, the second - 29 Hanley Road, Whalley Range, Manchester. His nephew - John Beales lived at Merle Park Avenue, Timperley. His death was reported in the 18/05/1917 edition of the Altrincham Guardian. |
